Hermann's Hole Mudfest 2011

last weekend, may 13-15, we celebrated the third birthday of hermann's hole, presented by khvt. the usual suspects rolled out on thursday to get everything ready to go and get a little skating in before the blowout. knoxville showed up late that night, so gold star for being the first out-of-towners (tennessee fool!), and shortly after, the rain came.
friday morning we woke up to a mud pit. everywhere. but that didn't stop us. armed with towels, a leaf blower, and a blow torch, we kept the concrete as dry as humanly possible between showers. while waiting on the crete to dry, there was mud boarding, skate barn sessions, and general debautury.

some mini-contests went down friday night. little manny won with some sick lien to tails as requested by yours truly.
saturday was still plagued with scattered showers (damn you nature!), but we were able to squeeze in some epic shredding regardless.

local ripper scotty laird killed the mini-bowl contest. andy skinner was passing through en route from wyoming to the east coast and stole second. and true to the st louis modus operandi, jeff rasp claimed third.
in the mini-bowl jr division, little manny took first and cj fuller grabbed second.

saturday night festivities included live music from gnarkansas coburn's well, well, well..., hermann local cam's rhum boogie, columbia's the cold cuts, and st louis's mutant opera, and a fireworks show provided by the dying pyros.

well, well, well...

sunday morning, we were greeted with more rain, but we had some setup to do for monday's pour. so the bio-dome was erected.

monday morning, party's over, the sun finally makes an appearance! and after slinging some bar and more ripping...

we finally got some mud on the ground (as in concrete, not the sludge we were trudging through all weekend).

with all hands on deck from the usual hermann's hole crew: jp, lynch and michelle, soup, menu zac, and rob; billy and andy from wyoming; brandon, dalton, nick, coburn, and jesse from gnarkansas; and nate from i can't smell my dinner, the breakfast bump sprung forth like a free-formed constantly blending concrete leviathan.

after the pour, gnarkansas followed us back to showmepools hq to skate the pool that cannot be named. and even though we were all beat and haggard from 5 days at hermann and a day of scrubbing, and nick later found out he had a broken rib, and everyone had a nice layer of mud on their griptape, good times were had by all.
a huge thanks goes out to everyone who came and supported st louis skateboarding, all the shredders who kept the session alive, everyone who put in work and all the bands. you all made hermann's hole skatefest III an epic weekend!

in an effort to bring our skateboarding community together and educate the kids about proper skatepark etiquette, KHVT will be hosting a skate clinic the first sunday of every month. kids, girls, beginners, kids at heart who need to be reacquainted with their skateboards; all are welcome.
the first clinic is this sunday, april 3rd, at 1:00 under the bridge.

the Pool that Cannot be Named

after hand digging, hand mixing over 650 bags of concrete, hand stacking aforementioned concrete, 63 feet of tile, and 15 different types of coping; the pool that cannot be named has reached completion. here in STL, vigilante concrete seems to be the new craze. and as stoked as we are to spend our steamy summer afternoons under the bridge, we've had something incubating for quite some time. SMP would like to extend our appreciation for everyone who has helped in any way, shape, or form, especially the few soldiers who have repeatedly shown up to earn their turns. Jonathan Harms is one of those soldiers, and he has sent us some of his photos from the last three pours.

the kingshighway bridge benefit was a success. we raised another couple grand for materials.

the next day we had an appreciation bbq with a hot dog eating contest.

in a southern suburb of columbus sits grove city. lotsa brick and pool coping, even the steel coping is of larger stock. ridiculous amounts of hips, double overhead trannies, and a couple bowls to choose from, including the mini pool on the backside of the fifteen ft pocket.

This was a Team Pain project I worked on five years ago. the pool is a pala deep end, and hogans shallow replica. I hadn't returned to this place since its completion. the shallow has 18 inch trannies in spots, a set of wedding cake stairs, tiles and hand poured coping. i feel fortunate to have been able to session this real pool numerous times in the last few months.

Let me start out by stating that matt dyke was the brains and foreman behind this midwest gem, and for that he is a fucking genius. what was supposed be to another generic skatepark got some extra attention through creativity and determination. there is a snakerun, a bowl, a streetcourse all blending into a basin type layout. the rolled lips, pump nipples and track around the bowl allow for endless non pushing runs. this is by far one of the funnest parks the midwest has to be proud of.

Since last post, we have been going full throttle. mattoon, illinois was a project that Tom Noble of who skates saved from cetain ARC death. For those living under a rock, American Ramp company (joplin, mo) has displayed very suspect buisness and selling tactics. They are the ones who have been selling every little town all these garbage ramps. We are plagued with these numerous piles of dogshit. i could go on and on about how our local skateboarding scene has been hard pressed to catch up with the standard as far as terrain is concerned... but i won't.
(but it does derive from these demons of skateparkism)

Tom Noble of who skates stepped in and convinced the city to save some money AND recieve a better product. Tom is fighting the good fight, and for that showmepools is proud to be a part of his projects... Mattoon, Illinois street plaza completed in 15 days... no shit

I just want to clear a few things up in case ya'll are confused. "Burnside" is called that because of the street it is located on. "Marginal Way" is the same. ditto for FDR. I dare you to go to Philly and call that concrete masterpiece "Phillyside". I bet Carlos and crew would have an earfull for ya. Which brings me to the youngsters here calling kingshwy "shitside". the new stuff is definitely not shit. The proof is in the pudding boys. This is, after all, the showme state.

if you see a pile of crap in front of "green concrete",that means it's not ready to ride. don't be an idiot and wreck shit. someone prolly busted their asses all night to get it to where it is. really though....

so it's been a while since this has been updated. been busy and procrastinating this.
we got back from working on nederland, co a couple months ago.

then we went to vegas to visit some family and met up with james and some of his crew, tim and ash from bad egg, and darren, deluna and the locs to skate some pools. in the process we visited frankie's tiki room with the motts, had a couple drinks with rene from sacrifice, and threw down a couple bucks at the roulette table. all in all a good trip.

for those of you that aren't in the know, there has been a hell of a lot of work going on for the past few weeks. the spring weather has been unpredictable to say the least. but with alot of determination,persistance and just being stronger than the elements or problems that arise, we ARE prevailing!

huge thanks to every single person that has lifted a finger. it definately takes a village. personally,I feel our skateboarding scene here in stl should be very thankful to have a few motivated roundwallers to contribute their time,energy,and money to a longoverdue project.
